What is the advantage of having lifetime map updates vs. map share on a GPS device?

My head is spinning with all the options. I have settled on a Tom Tom GPS, but am not sure if I should go with lifetime map updates or if the map share option (the thing where users share their own updates) is sufficient. Does anyone have any experience with either of these options? What did you think?
