Are " pit bulls " a recognized dog breed?

I am familiar with many breeds in the AKC and UKC. I have seen American Staffordshire Terriers and American Bull Terriers in shows. I have not heard of pit bulls as a recognized dog breed.Can you help settle this diagrement,please. Thank you for taking time to respond to my question.
